This is the third Mhairi McFarlane book I've read in the last two months and I count the days until the next. She writes about women I can relate to, doesn't throw the characters into bed together on their first meeting or have them shop for shoes and clothing most women can't afford. The heroines are me and you with stand up comic sense of humours and real problems. I particularly loved how the man that cheated wasn't the typical bad boyfriend and the characters entered into a story arc likely to happen in real life. Part of me was still rooting for Paul. This book took a unique angle with the fox who gave Delia courage and I liked how this theme was explored with the Naan as well, though I fully expected romance between these two at first.
Mhairi is a new fave author and I should be her USA bff.

The premise sounded so interesting, but I got completely turned off by the espionage-ish plot in the middle. I found myself skipping through to the end just to see how it all turned out.
I was shivering with pleasure throughout this entire book. Every character was rich and deeply layered. It felt like it was real that's how effortless it seemed. I cannot wait to read the rest of her work.
Many relationships are about this giving things up for the other, not really seeing the other side views. I'm glad the author gave her courage and strength to go to the new me what I want person to get to the happily everyday ever afters well done funny sad lols!
I loved the humor, I loved the depth. I loved the main character and her growth. I loved how love wasn't easy-peasy and you just *know* what to do and whom to love.
This book was light and complex at the same time. The characters were truly contemporary and not relics from the 50s,
This is my first - but certainly not my last - book by this author.
I loved the voice in this book. It's really hard to not love/root for Delia. There were so many laugh-out-loud moments throughout the book as well as sweet ones, sad ones, tense ones, and what-were-you-thinking? ones. I actually liked that she didn't always make the smart/right decision. It made the story more real and relatable. I think the only reason I'm giving this four stars instead of five is because it seemed to have a lot of subplots that didn't all get as fleshed-out as I hoped they would by the end. I will definitely be looking into the author's other stories, though.
I've had this novel on my wish list for awhile. When the price dropped, I snapped it up. I read You Had Me At Hello by this author and loved it. However, I had a hard time getting into this book. I didn't really like the main character until about halfway through the book. Once I reached the halfway point I really started to enjoy the story and Delia (main character). I'm glad I stuck it out - I like this author's writing, I just had a hard time getting hooked in this time.
What a fun story! Mhairi McFarlane can really write and this story pulls you in right from the beginning. I found myself marveling at the fact that I was reading about the heroine's boring job without being bored myself -- well done! The dialogue is good and while the story isn't a new one (girl betrayed, goes to a new town and grows up and realizes she can stand on her own. And of course, finds a new love!) it is done in such a way that it was fun, intelligent, and felt fresh. There are funny moments and funny asides and a nice tone to the whole book that made it a joy to read. I still think Ms McFarlane's "Here's looking at you" was her best so far but this was good too. The reason for 4 stars vs 5 is that I found the last quarter of the book to be a bit slow --not so slow that I put the book down -- and since it was arguably the most important part of the story I was sorry about that. But in all, this was good, the author is a good writer and is definitely now on my auto-buy list!
