The House of Debauch The Curious Adventures of the Debauch Family and Their Struggle with Evil Color Illustrations eBook Clair LaVaye Reviews

What a fun ride getting to know the Debauch Family! The writing is exquisite, the adventures engaging, the family members are full of intrigue and seduction. Zunker is gorgeous--women as well as gay men will want to know him. If you like New Orleans, family dysfunction, early 1900's, vampires, darkness, blood and struggles with evil, get yourself a copy. The art is beyond words!
To say this is my favorite vampire novel is an understatment. In the world we live in today where books FOR CHILDREN get written and make best seller is such a insult to anyone who reads AT AN ADULT LEVEL. THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN AND WROTE FOR ADULTS..and it shows. The characters are extreamly lovable. The story is compelling and to the point that if you read even a small part of the book you will want to read MORE! Honestly more books need to be written like this and I find it truely tragic that we live in the world we do that books like this DON'T GET THE ATTENTION THEY SHOULD!
Set in the Deep South, this is the story of four young people growing up in the town of New Orleans at the turn of the 20th Century. More colorful than most towns, they enjoy life there; Mardi Gras and coming of age in a New Orleans full of vices and fun. But newcomers into the neighborhood change the course of plans laid carefully, with each person heading in the direction of new destinies and dark secrets being revealed.

Clairwil and Zunker are brother and sister, living on their family estate Rhapsody, outside of New Orleans. Across from them are their cousins Presia and Devon Debauch at their estate Ravenwood. The cousins are close but Clairwil and Devon have feelings between them they do not mention to each other or anyone else. Presia and Zunker are on paths of alternate lifestyles.

Mardi Gras celebrations, parties and final lessons taught by the family secretary siblings Clairwil and Zunker are to be launched into travels around the world. But this changes when the secretary Miss Reinfield arrives home from her trip to Amsterdam, where she met with Count Strigor and settled the sale of the abandoned Debauch Plantation. Miss Reinfield is an odd person in looks and character, but when she returns from her trip she is more morose and quiet than usual. Then illness strikes Clairwil causing her to become extremely tired, sleeping more of the day away and to have little appetite for food. One night cousin Presia was coming to visit, when she stumbled upon Clairwil lying on the ground outside on the lawn with dark figures around her. She lets out a scream, the figures vanish and Presia finds Clairwil almost nude with blood on her body. Unbeknownst to the family, Ms. Reinfield had brought back an evil vampire, Count Strigor, and started the chain of events leading to Clairwil's and her family's descent into the alternate life of being vampire.

Filled with rich details of turn-of-the-century New Orleans and written mostly through the POV of each character through journal entries, House of Debauch will take you into the past and make you feel you are actually observing life with the characters. Ms. LaVaye's book is more of an gothic urban fantasy than actual paranormal story of vampires and wolves. Also included are very detailed pictures of each character. It is very interesting and brings a real taste of New Orleans and its culture of the time.

I would recommend for anyone that loves to read Gothic or Urban Fantasy. Ms. LaVaye writes her book as journal entries, with explanation and a wonderful picture at the beginning of each `chapter'. It does sometimes become confusing when Ms. LaVaye starts out with a journal entry but then changes over into a chapter and interaction between characters. Some of the entries don't appear to mesh and also can become confusing. This is a 4 star book and one that was enjoyable to read.

To the positive, the historical, "old New Orleans", aspect was interesting and seemed well researched. To the negative, the characters were flat, boring, never captured my interest. The plot was dull enough that I quit reading about half way through.
Blah.
This is an interesting, well written, well researched fiction. It's a vampire novel, a popular subject these days, and should appeal to many readers.
