Mama Makes Up Her Mind And Other Dangers of Southern Living Bailey White 9780679751601 Books

This is a collection of short, clever essays. Baily White writes with a keen sense of humor. Some of the material is out of date: recording on tapes, calculators instead of computers at the car dealer. Despite this, the stories hold their relevance.

Some of the stories are better than others, but they are all worth reading. In fact, I would like to revisit some of them. This is a good book to read a few chapters at a time. Each story is unique.

The essays are written in the first person. The narrator, I presume, Bailey, is an elementary school teacher and events occur from that perspective. (The author was a first-grade teacher). A good many of the stories involve her mama. However, some of the later stories do not include her mother, at all. The essay “Mortality” tells of Bailey’s attempt to buy a new car; her odometer stopped working at 300,000 miles. “Micanopy” is an example of her very imaginative 200-mile trip to a used bookstore.

This is a relaxing book. There is nothing complicated about the writing; it is just decent, simple, but funny, prose.

Mama Makes Up Her Mind And Other Dangers of Southern Living Bailey White 9780679751601 Books Reviews

fun and humorous
I haven't even finished it yet, and I wanted to encourage you to read this lovely little gem. . . believe what all the well written reviews are saying.. .the humor sneaks up on you, all of a sudden you will let out a hoot.. . now I want to go find my own alliagtor to make friends with.. . "but for some people at least, I'm pretty sure sleep is more effective than prayer"...
Bailey White is one writer who protrays the south that Southerners only know. I have lent this book to some less-than-Southern-friends and they've not the least notion of what is going on and do not appreciate it at all. All of us here at my house and in my family love the book. I would recommend it for anyone really Southern.
This is a delightful little set of closely related short stories. I'm guessing the writing is an appropriate level for persons age 12 and up, as it isn't at all childish and yet it's structure is not very complex. It makes for great relaxing bedtime reading.
I read this book to my 94 year old mother who is bedridden in a skilled nursing center and although she had some difficulty following the stories the tone of the author and the subject matter were very engaging and she laughed several times. I appreciated the author's ability to be frank about herself and her behavior and interaction with others. Her mother was a gem. I will try another in the future.
This is one of the most humorous books I've ever read. An easy read, I keep it on the nightstand in the guest room for our visitors to enjoy, too. Whether you read a short chapter or the whole thing you'll relate to the lovable craziness of the characters. Ms. White paints a picture of her life that we not only see but can step into. From the bathtub on the porch, the bicyclists, to the DIY adventures in electricity, it becomes quite obvious that we Southern ladies are not relegated to our mint juleps in rocking chairs on the front porch. I love it every time I read it!
I really wanted to like this collection. I am fascinated by the rural deep South, but by about midway through the book I had had just about enough of the "aren't we just the quirkiest thangs you've ever heard of?" genre of literature. I managed to plow through till the end, but was left feeling the tales were ultimately shallow and not really that vivid. I'm thinking, perhaps these should be read one at a time with a few weeks in between, so it wouldn't seem that she' trying so hard. Maybe put this book on the guest room nightstand.
